Revolution! – The Young Karl Marx – film screening | Counterfire

Ahead of Karl Marx’s birthday, join us for this film screening of the critically acclaimed The Young Karl Marx as part of Counterfire’s Revolution! May Day Weekender event.

Note: You DO NOT need a separate ticket for the film screening if you’ve already booked for the Revolution event.

Directed by Raoul Peck, the Oscar-nominated director of I Am Not You Negro (2016), The Young Karl Marx re-raised the spectre of communism in 2017, but had a very limited release in the UK. So we’re proud to bring the film back for this special screening!

The film follows the life of Marx as he is forced into exile and develops his political worldview along with his collaborator Friedrich Engels. It is a historical drama which manages to be entertaining, informative and geared towards reclaiming Marx as a figure for our times, not just his own.

At the start of the screening, there will be a short introduction by Katherine Connelly, biographer of Sylvia Pankhurst. The screening is situated in the middle of a weekend of discussions on the political crises we face and how the left can organise.

Technical info: Runtime: 118 mins | Audio languages: English, French and German, with English subtitles

Glasgow – Understanding Trump’s new world order | Counterfire

Since his re-election last November, Donald Trump has wasted little time reorienting the American economy and upending the US’ own so-called international rules-based order.

From shattering ‘The West’ alliance over Ukraine, to waging a global trade war – American priorities have shifted with the impact being felt everywhere.

But what does a new era of protectionism mean for workers across the world? How does the Trump administration look at the Middle East and the question of Palestine?
