Leading figures on the left are coming together next week to discuss how we respond to Starmer’s rush to the right
Labour’s failure to vote against the Tories’ bill to ban boycotts is just the latest sign of what a craven party it has become. Since taking over the party, Starmer has ditched almost every progressive commitment he ever made from providing free school meals to tackling the climate crisis.
He and his leadership have concentrated their energy on witch-hunting the left rather than attacking the right. He has succeeded in virtually silencing the parliamentary left and creating a party which offers next to nothing for working people.
All this at a time of multiple crises in society and in the middle of the biggest strike wave for decades. As a result, thousands of activists are now asking what is the way forward.
Counterfire is very happy to be hosting a discussion next Thursday 13 July at 6:30pm at the Indian YMCA, W1T 6AQ in central London with three leading figures from the left about how socialists should respond.
Speakers:
- Emma Dent Coad was the MP for Kensington from 2017 to 2019 and resigned from her position as leader of the Labour group on Kensington and Chelsea a few months ago.
- Ed McNally is an activist and writer, including for Jacobin and New Left Review
- Lindsey German is a campaigner, author and leading member of Counterfire
