Protesters gathered in London to oppose the horrific violence perpetrated against Muslims in Delhi, reports Ben Tunstall

On Saturday, the imperial architecture of Aldwych echoed with the angry chants of the emergency demonstration outside the Indian Embassy to protest against the anti-Muslim progroms in Delhi.

Called at short notice by the South Asia Solidarity Group, SOAS Indian Society and others, the demonstration drew 200 or so people who loudly chanted their outrage.

Speakers made clear that the Indian diaspora is not to be taken as implicit supporters of Modi’s government, and that this is not a matter only of concern to Indians or Muslims.

Modi was receiving Donald Trump during the violence, who praised Modi as “a champion of religious freedom”. The global alliance of Bonapartist bullies forming across the world includes our own government of Boris Johnson and Priti Patel, and state-sponsored Islamophobia is one of their main instruments.

The protest was largely made up of the Indian diaspora and could have done with more participation from the wider left, our international solidarity at this time is crucial.
