Figures obtained by a Freedom of Information request to the Metropolitan Police show a 60% increase in the monthly average compared to period prior to Lee Rigby murder
Anti-muslim hate crimes have increased massively over the last three years.
In October 2014, the BBC reported that anti-Muslim hate crime had increased 65% in London.
The monitoring organisation Tell MAMA (Measuring Anti-Muslim Attacks), decided to investigate this further to see whether the proliferation of anti-Muslim attacks after the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby in Woolwich, May 2013 was a temporary spike. A Freedom of Information Request to the Metropolitan Police obtained a detailed breakdown of every anti-Muslim hate crime from April 2012 to August 2014 by borough. The data (available online) revealed an even more disturbing story:
‘Between August 2013 and September 2014 the average number of hate crimes recorded by the Metropolitan police was 60% higher compared to the average prior to the murder of Lee Rigby, suggesting a long-term increase in the average level of anti-Muslim hate crimes in London.’
