Counterfire’s third annual conference took place on February 1st and 2nd at SOAS
The annual conference is the body which discusses and decides Counterfire’s strategy, policy and priorities on the basis of an analysis of the political situation and members’ experiences.
It also elects the Steering committee and has the power to change the constitution.
Who comes?
We encourage all members to attend to make conference as effective as possible.
Only registered (ie paying) members can be delegates. Members who have joined by 17 January can be delegates as long as they take out a completed direct debit/standing order before the conference (including on the door). Otherwise, unregistered members (ie members who have filled out a form but are not paying) can attend as observers. Observers have speaking rights but not voting rights.
Other non-members can attend as observers by invitation.
There will be a cost of £10/£5 concessions which will help to cover travel from outside London.
How does the conference work?
The conference will be arranged around thematic sessions with introductions and wide discussion (see agenda below).
There will be voting on resolutions tabled by the steering committee and others and amendments if they come up.
Resolutions and amendments both have to be proposed and seconded by registered members.
Deadlines:
Resolutions: Friday 17th Jan
Amendments: Friday 24th Jan
The SC has proposed a conference arrangements committee which will be put to conference comprising of Fran Legg, Alastair Stephens, Lindsey German, Chris Nineham and Elaine Graham Leigh.
Elections for Steering Committee
The conference will elect a steering committee of a maximum of twenty people in an individual ballot.
Nominations for Steering Committee have to be received by 24 January
