Marking the centenary of the Balfour Declaration, thousands of people marched in London to show solidarity with Palestine
Thousands of people marched through London today to reject the British government’s decision to celebrate the centenary of the Balfour Declaration, including by inviting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the UK, and to share solidarity with the people of Palestine.
Speaking at the celebration dinner she hosted on the centenary of the Declaration, Theresa May proudly proclaimed:
When some people suggest we should apologise for this letter, I say absolutely not. We are proud of our pioneering role in the creation of the State of Israel.
We are proud to stand here today together with Prime Minister Netanyahu and declare our support for Israel. And we are proud of the relationship we have built with Israel.
And today thousands sent a resounding message of objection to Theresa May: Not in our name.
Speakers including Mark Serwotka, Dave Randall, Ken Loach, Mustafa Barghouti, John Rees and Salma Yaqoob echoed the words of the thousands of protesters when they called for an end to the occupation of Palestine, the apartheid system and the siege on Gaza and said that Britain should be apologising for the Balfour Declaration and our role in supporting Israel and its oppression of the Palestinians since.
