Why Join We believe if the left is to progress it must show it can make a difference to the world.

Our aim: an organisation dedicated to building the widest possible resistance to austerity and war and the system that creates them

1This should be the left’s moment

Millions are angry at austerity, corrupt, self-serving politicians and their addiction to foreign wars.

2We make a difference

Counterfire has been central to organising the People’s Assembly and the anti-war movement nationally and locally.

3Socialism can be popular

Counterfire.org is visited by thousands every week. Our website, print publications and events are updating revolutionary ideas for the 21st century.

4We must not be divided

Counterfire was launched with a feminist manifesto for the 21st Century and we prioritise fighting the racism and sexism that can thrive in the misery of austerity.

5We are growing

In just four years Counterfire has set up activist groups in cities and colleges around the country. Resistance is not automatic, it has to be organised. Join us and help make it happen.

A left that builds resistance

Coalition ResistanceOn International Women’s Day 2010 we launched a new political organisation called Counterfire.

Our aim: an organisation dedicated to building the widest possible resistance to austerity and war and the system that creates them. We don’t start with what seperates us from the rest of the movement. We believe if the left is to progress it must show it can make a difference to the world.

We were at the heart of the student movement in 2010 and key to launching the People’s Assembly last year, now the essential vehicle building united resistance to austerity. There are more than 90 People’s Assemblies from Pontypridd to Norwich, from Glasgow to Brighton.

MeetingCounterfire has been central to sustaining the anti-war movement right through to the campaign that stopped Cameron dragging us into war with Syria. Stop the War is now working for the biggest possible protests at the Nato summit in Wales in the summer of 2014.

Our trade union members and supporters have been pushing for joint strike action between the unions and buiilding support whenever workers resist. Our coverage of disputes, from the tube strikes to the Doncaster care workers, has been second to none.

Dangerous ideas for dangerous times

Our website has set a new benchmark in the online presentation of socialist ideas and our frequent free broadsheets have broken the mould.
We helped initiate the Dangerous Times festival which has brought hundreds of new activists into close contact with the left.

ProtestCounterfire members have produced a vital body of new socialist theory ranging from the widely read Strategy and Tactics to A Marxist History of the World and a new book on radical suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst. We have re-released John Rees’ ABC of Socialism because socialist ideas have a new mass audience.

Most importantly we have set up Counterfire activist groups around the country commited to building the widest possible resistance. We believe all this makes Counterfire the most outward looking, dynamic and thoughtful organisation on the left.

We urge you to join us.
